Door Closer Basics

Many seemingly inconspicuous items in our daily lives quietly safeguard our safety, and the door closer is one of them. You can find them everywhere—from residential entrance doors to those in shopping malls and fire doors in hospitals.

How It Works

While door closers are incredibly familiar to us, that familiarity is often only superficial; do we truly understand how they work?

A door closer is a hydraulic device that functions much like a spring. When the door is opened, the movement drives a gear that pushes a piston to compress a spring, while hydraulic fluid flows within the chamber to store energy. Once the opening action concludes, the spring releases its stored potential energy. The hydraulic fluid then flows back slowly through a throttle valve, controlling the closing speed and ensuring a smooth, cushioned motion.

The “Unseen” Benefits

Many people view door closers merely as tools that make opening doors easier, assuming they serve little other purpose. In reality, they do much more. Beyond basic functions like automatic closing and privacy protection, they help maintain indoor temperatures and block hallway noise and dust from entering.

They also serve as a critical line of defense for safety. In the event of a fire, they automatically close fire doors, effectively containing the spread of smoke and flames and securing escape routes. The hydraulic damping design provides a cushioning effect, preventing loud slamming noises. Furthermore, by reducing airflow—which can spread germs—and blocking noise, they are essential fixtures in places like hospitals and shopping malls.

Types of Door Closers

  • Hydraulic Door Closers: The most widely used type; they offer smooth, adjustable closing speeds and are ideal for high-traffic areas like shopping malls and office buildings.
  • Electric Door Closers: These can integrate with fire safety and access control systems; often used with “normally open” fire doors to enable smart management.
  • Concealed Door Closers: Installed within the door or frame so they remain hidden from view; they offer a sleek aesthetic suitable for high-end hotels and glass doors.
  • Spring Door Closers: Simple in structure and cost-effective; suitable only for lightweight, low-frequency use, such as interior residential doors.
